Fearing a large influx of refugees from Afghanistan, Turkey has strengthened the vigil at the Iran border.
Ever since the Taliban terrorists took control of the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday (August 15), it ignited a large displacement of Afghans, many of them trying to flee the country to escape the Taliban’s brutalities.
Turkey shares a border with Iran, and Iran shares a long border with Iraq. Fearing refugees will cross the long porous border with Iran to come to Turkey, it intensified the efforts at the border to stop the influx.
The patrolling has been increased at the Turkey-Iran border, and Turkey is building a 295-km long wall at the Iran border.
Turkey has also tacitly declined to take any refugees from Afghanistan.
About 30 lakh Afghans were displaced internally at the end of 2020. The numbers are expected to go much higher since the Taliban took over the country.
Earlier, as reported by the Organiser, the Bangladesh government had turned down the request from the United States to accommodate some Afghan refugees.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen told the UNB in Dhaka that Bangladesh received a request from the US, which it rejected as it is already facing problems by giving shelter to the Rohingya refugees who came to the country from Myanmar.
Saudi Arabia has also declined to take any Afghan refugees.
