Shakti Peeth and Matua Shrine in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Itinerary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bangladesh on a two-day visit.   He will be participating in the 50th Independence Day celebrations of Bangladesh. There will be multiple bilateral meetings aimed at boosting the friendly relationship between the two countries.   In his packed schedule, Prime Minister Modi will be visiting two places of religious significance: Jeshoreshwari temple in Ishwaripur and Thakur Bari in Orakandi.   Jeshoreshwari temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali and is one of the Shakti Peeths of the Hindu religion. The Hindu religion has 51 Shakti Peeths, mostly located in Bharat and few in neighbouring countries.   Thakur Bari in Orakandi is the birthplace of Shri Harichand Thakur, the founder of the Matua sect.   Matuas are the Hindus who fled Bangladesh to escape religious persecution.   They have a significant population in West Bengal and visit the birthplace of Shri Harichand Thakur to pay their respects.
