Rape Victim of Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal Threatened by Police & TMC to Withdraw Complaint and Join TMC

The rape victim was also threatened and categorically told she would be responsible for the death of her family members if she didn’t withdraw the complaint.

A rape victim of the post-poll violence in West Bengal has written to the NHRC to save her and her family as police and TMC leaders threatened her into withdrawing the complaint and join the TMC.

The victim was gang-raped on May 2, the day the election results of the West Bengal assembly were declared.

She had earlier complained to the NHRC on June 21 when the NHRC team was in West Bengal on the directions of the Calcutta High Court to investigate the cases of post-poll violence in the state.

In her letter to the NHRC chairperson on Wednesday (July 28), she has written, “During the period between filing my complaint to NHRC till July 23, I was being pressurised by the Police and local TMC leaders to withdraw my complaint and change my statement.”

She has also mentioned how, on the night of July 23, police officers raided her house to intimidate her.

Again on Wednesday (July 28), local TMC workers forcibly took her to the house of a local TMC leader, where she was threatened with dire consequences if she did not abide by the diktat.

“On 26 and 27 July TMC leaders approached my family and relatives and started intimidating and threatening them to kill if I did not retract from my statement and complaint,” she has written in her letter to the NHRC chairperson.

A bench of the Calcutta High Court is hearing the post-poll violence cases of West Bengal.
