Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (August 31) called Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to inquire about the state's flood situation and assured all possible assistance by the central government.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Spoke to Assam CM Shri @himantabiswa and took stock of the flood situation in parts of the state. Assured all possible support from the Centre to help mitigate the situation. I pray for the safety and well-being of those living in the affected areas.

Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said about the discussion with the PM over Twitter, “Adarniya Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi telephoned today to enquire about the flood situation and assured all help to Assam to combat this menace. Current flood has gravely impacted the livelihoods of people. My gratitude to Adarniya Modi Ji for standing with us at this hour of crisis,” Sarma tweeted.

As many as 3 lakh 63 thousand people are affected by floods in 21 districts in Assam. 950 villages have been affected due to floods, and 1619 people have taken shelter in 44 relief camps established by district authorities.

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report on August 30, as many as 950 villages in 21 districts of Assam that inhabit 3,63,135 people have been affected due to floods in the state.

As per the ASDMA data, the world's largest river island, Majuli, is the worst affected district in flood, with as many as 64 thousand people of the island have been affected by the flood. The devastating flood also hits 41 thousand people in the Darrang district in North Assam. As many as 75 thousand of domestic animals are also hit by the latest flood in Assam. A total of 30,333 hectares of crops were also damaged in flood.
