A mud house with no water and toilet, three goats, three cows, and Rs 31,985 as savings, this is what Chandana Bauri, 30 owns, the BJP candidate for Saltora Assembly seat, Bankura.
She is the poorest nominee in the assembly polls 2021.
Chandana Bauri’s husband Sraban is a daily wage worker who earns Rs 400 a day. When labourers are hard to find during the monsoon season, Chandana works as a helper with him. The couple is MNREGA cardholders, and they have three children.
“We have to walk to the nearby field to relieve ourselves. Last year we got the first instalment of the (Pradhan Mantri) Awas Yojana-Gramin of Rs 60,000 and made two concrete rooms,” she says.
“The Trinamool is corrupt, “It has not done any development work, and pocketed all the money that Modiji sent for welfare schemes. From toilet to house schemes, people have to give cut money to Trinamool men, Chandana says.”
Chandana’s father-in-law Sunil, who made a living making plates of sal leaves, says, “Only four chairs belong to us. The rest have been brought by villagers and party workers while pointing to the chairs lined in front of the pucca house that is half-finished.”
It is to be noted that she was unaware that the party had given her ticket to contest polls from the Saltora seat. It was her neighbours who told Bauri about her candidature. Saltora will go to the polls in the first phase on March 27.
