Newly formed militant group threatened to carry out blast in Assam; Army-Police killed two militants in encounter

Guwahati: Two cadres of the newly floated militant outfit, United Liberation of Bodoland have been gunned down during an exchange of fire with a joint team of Army and Kokrajhar police in the wee hours of Friday. The newly formed militant group ULB, in a video statement on Friday threatened to kill government officials if police do encounter them. They also threatened to carry out blasts in Assam from October if their demands are not met.

The two deceased have been identified as Jangshar Mushahary, 23 and Janak Kr Brahma, 23, from Kokrajhar.The police recovered two pistols and eight grenades from the site of the encounter.

Police officials in Kokrajhar said the encounter took place early this morning at Kokrajhar’s Ultapani Jungle, where the two had come to demand money at Bishmuri area in the district.

Police sources said acting on a tip about the presence of armed militants in the jungle, a team of police and Army launched a joint operation in Lungsung forest in Kokrajhar.

“When the team had approached the armed militants in the jungle, they opened fire targeting the security forces.  The police and army personnel retaliated and later we found two persons lying on the ground injured. They were taken to the RNB Hospital in Kokrajhar where they were declared brought dead,” Police said in Kokrajhar.

They were allegedly involved in extortion in the Bismuri area of the Kokrajhar district.

It should be mentioned that, Days after the newly floated Bodo outfit National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB) returned to the mainstream, another rebel group was formed in the Bodo belt with separate Bodoland state demands.
