Arshad befriended Swati on the social media platform Instagram. Swati realised that something was amiss in what Arshad was telling her. She wanted to distance herself from him.
When she told Arshad about it, he wanted to meet her one last time. Swati did not realise that this last meeting with Arshad would be the last day of her life.
On March 22, Kamal, Swati’s cousin, came home for lunch when he got to know that Swati was missing for the last few hours. A frantic search started for Swati.
This was when Kamal noticed that Swati’s phone was at home, and there were suspicious chats with one Arshad. The family immediately rushed to the Pisangan police station in Ajmer district.
The victim’s body was found in a forest near the Ras-Mangliyawas highway late in the evening. Kamal told the police that he was alerted about Love Jihad through the suspicious chat.
Kamal told the police that Swati was first trapped, and then a conspiracy was hatched by Arshad to behead her. The knife used to behead her has been recovered.
Arshad had emotionally blackmailed Swati to meet him one last time. If the plan was not to murder her, why did Arshad carry a long knife when he was out to see Swati?
The victim’s family members also suspect that the victim might have been gang-raped before beheading.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and some local Hindu organisations had staged a protest in the district, demanding monetary compensation for the family and justice for the victim.
Rishabh Singh, a local Hindu activist, told Swarajya magazine that Arshad was a migrant to Ajmer and was working at a garage.
He further said that the area was witnessing a sharp growth in the number of Muslim migrants, which increased the risk of “love jihad” for Hindu girls.
