New Delhi: Despite being allies and constituents of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), the saffron party has decided to contest the by-election to the Tuirial assembly constituency scheduled to be held on October 30.
BJP announced K Laldinthara, a prominent former student leader as its nominee. The by-poll is set for a multi-cornered contest and could, in the long run, leave its impact in the general elections to the 40-member state legislature in 2023.
The ruling MNF of Chief Minister Zoramthanga has nominated K. Laldingliana, chairman of the state-owned Mizoram State Cooperative Marketing & Consumers Federation Ltd (MIZOFED).
The principal opposition Congress has announced the name of former legislator Chalrosanga.
The regional party Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has named Lal Tlanmawia of Kolasib town as their candidate.
The key constituency falls within the Kolasib district that shares a border with Assam.
Recently, there were serious clashes between Assam and Mizoram police personnel on boundary issues.
By-poll to the Tuirial assembly seat was necessitated by the recent demise of Independent sitting legislator Andrew H. Thangliana.
The announcement made by BJP general secretary Arun Singh also announced saffron party candidates for Deglur (Maharashtra) - Sudhash Pirajirao Savane and Huzurabad (Telangana) - Etela Rajender.
