Guwahati: As many as three dreaded criminals were injured in Assam police encounters on Friday night.

Land Mafia Nazrul Islam has sustained bullet injury after Assam police personnel opened fire while he tried to ‘escape’ from custody in Dabaka area in Hojai district. While the land mafia was taken for a spot investigation by a team of Hojai police, Nazrul tried to flee by snatching a pistol from a police officer and even fired a round of bullets. 

Police said that Nazrul was taken to Lumding reserve forest by the police, as they were conducting a drive against other land brokers in the forest.

To prevent his escape police fired on his left leg. Currently, Islam is being treated at Nagaon civil hospital. 

Earlier, Nazrul was arrested on November 16 and was in police custody for 3 days. Notably, over 1000 migrant Muslim families were evicted from the Lumding forest, who were brought by land mafia Nazrul and company for turmeric cultivation from 2007 onwards.

One car lifter, Jakir Hussain, also sustained bullet injuries while trying to escape from police custody. A Hojai district police team was taking seriel offender Jakir Hussain to a place in Dabaka area in search of few stolen bikes. But the car lifter tried to escape, hurting a police official. Police team fired on him to prevent the escape. The injured car lifter has been admitted to Nagaon civil hospital. 

In another incident, a wanted drug mafia sustained bullet injuries in Guwahati on Friday night. Guwahati & Kamrup Police seized half a kg of heroin in a joint operation on Friday evening. Police received input that a truck bearing registration no MN 07 C 4292 was carrying narcotics meant to be supplied to Guwahati, Kamrup and other areas.

Based on the input, City and Kamrup Police under the guidance of Joint CP, Guwahati intercepted the truck at Byrnihat, Meghalaya. Two persons namely Ithemcha Muslam of Sikhong Thongubai,Thoubal district and Ramesh Kr Chetry of Kamlatombi, Senapati district in Manipur were detained. On being questioned and searched, hidden cabinets were detected inside the truck cabin.

40 nos of soap boxes containing 40 packets of heroin were discovered and seized. The contraband weighed more than half a kilograms and is valued at more than Rupees 4 crore in the international market. 

Later, the person who had ordered the contraband, namely Nongthnou, was apprehended from the Bhetapara area in Guwahati. While the city police were carrying out a search operation, drug mafia Nongthnou alias Yonovam tried to escape near the highway. Police team fired on him to prevent the escape. The drug mafia sustained bullet injuries in his leg and admitted to hospital now.
