Given the rising Covid cases, the organisers decided not to hold the event this year to not attract huge crowds

Buffalo fight is a traditional game held in upper Assam districts where farmers bring their domestic buffalo for a fight and prize. 

 

Guwahati: Several traditional festivals related to Magh Bihu in Assam have been cancelled due to the rising covid situation. Assam continues to witness a rising trend in Covid-19 cases that has led to the cancellation of some popular festivals in the state.

The occasion of Magh Bihu sees several local traditional festivals in different parts of Assam. However, due to the prevailing Covid scenario, many of these festivals have been cancelled.

The well-known Monikut festival of Hajo stands cancelled after organisers decided to hold given the rising Covid cases. Meanwhile, the popular buffalo fight event in the Ahotguri area in the Morigaon district of Assam has also been cancelled. Buffalo fight is a traditional game held in upper Assam districts where farmers bring their domestic buffalo for a fight and prize. Buffalo fights were held during the Ahom kings on Magh Bihu at its capital, Sivasagar at 'Rang Ghar' palace. Buffalo fight is organised in several parts of upper and middle Assam in the first 15 days of the Hindu Magh month. Given the rising Covid cases, the organisers decided not to hold the event this year to not attract huge crowds.

Assam reported 2,348 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, which brought the positivity rate to 7.80 per cent. The Kamrup Metropolitan district saw 870 new cases, marking a slight dip compared to previous days. This brings Assam's current active caseload to 15,267. Five Covid related deaths were reported in the state and 861 Covid patients were discharged after attaining full recovery. This brings the recovery rate to 96.44 per cent.
