Evacuation of Afghans from Kabul Airport Stops as Qatar Refuses to Take Afghan Refugees

Earlier, Bangladesh and Turkey have also refused to take any refugees from Afghanistan, and the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) has maintained studied silence.

Afghans are thronging the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, hoping that they would take the next flight to escape the brutality of the Taliban.

Qatar also refuses to take any more refugees from Afghanistan. The crowd is swelling at the airport.

“Soldiers by the runway at Kabul airport tell me that there are 10,000 people here processed and ready to go… but nowhere to fly them to because Qatar is refusing to accept more Afghans because they’ve reached capacity. “It’s abysmal… someone needs to step up”, posted CNN’s Chief International Correspondent Clarissa Ward on Friday (August 20) evening.

On Saturday (August 21) morning, she posted, “Just landed in Doha with the team and nearly 300 Afghan evacuees. Huge thanks to all of you for your support and concern, to the US Air Force for flying us out and to Qatar for welcoming us. We are the lucky ones.”

Earlier, as reported by the Organiser, the Bangladesh government had turned down the request from the United States to accommodate some Afghan refugees.

Turkey is building a wall along its Iran border to stop the influx of Afghan refugees.
