The European Union is facing shortage of vaccine doses and has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow it to buy emergency doses from Pune-based Serum Institute of India. The Serum Institute is manufacturing AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine under the brand name Covishield. The Union has requested for a purchase of 10 million doses. The glitches have slowed the production of the Astra Zeneca’s vaccine in the European Union plants. As a result, the 27-nation Union is not able to vaccinate its 450 million people. Bharat has already exported more than 70 million doses to about 83 countries. With its huge population to vaccinate, the Government of India is finding it very difficult to make any export commitment. Britain is also requesting for its supply of the remaining order of the 10 million doses it had purchased. Pune-based Serum Institute is the world’s largest manufacturing centre of vaccines.
