Delhi Court Reserves Order in Framing of Charges Against Shashi Tharoor for His Wife Sunanda Pushkar’s Death

A Delhi court Monday reserved its order in the framing of charges against former union minister Shashi Tharoor in his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death case. The verdict will possibly be out on April 29. If the order is not ready by then, Special Judge Geetanjali Goel said, a short extension may be announced. The former union minister and senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her suite in a Delhi hotel in January 2014. The circumstances surrounding her death made it look very suspicious. Tharoor was having an extramarital affair with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar and Pushkar had expressed her strong disapproval about it. Also before her death, Pushkar had revealed to her friends that Tharoor was torturing her ‘mentally’. The Delhi Police pressed for framing of charges under Section 498 A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 306 (abetment to suicide). The cause of death was ascertained to be poisoning because of consumption of Alprazolam, a drug used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Since injecting the drug was not ruled out as a possible cause of death, the Delhi Police alternatively pressed for Section 302 of the IPC. Tharoor is out on bail in the case.
