Guwahati: “Justice is everyone’s right and should always prevail”. Yes, the Assam Police have been directed to follow this to bring justice to the needy. The changing face of Assam police is being witnessed by many in recent months. Ever since Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken charge as the state's Chief Minister, he has been continuously trying to bring the much-expected change in Assam police.

His efforts that the Assam police are now doing the home delivery of the police report in accident cases. The Bongaigaon police have started handing over dozens of accident case reports” Form 54” to the next kin of accident victims by visiting their homes.

Other districts of Assam Police are also practising the same. In the first-ever conclave of the Officer-in-Charge of the police stations of Assam police on 5th July, the chief minister, who is also the home minister of the state, asked the officers to offer their help to accident victim families on humanitarian ground.

He categorically asked the OC’s that police should go to the victim’s family and hand over the accident report on a priority basis.

“As per standers rules, the form 54 should be given to the accident victim family within 7 days by the police, but earlier due to negligence of the investigating officer it takes months to serve that. Now after the direct instructions from the honorable chief minister, we have made it mandatory to hand over the form 54 to the next kin of the accident victim at their residence within seven working days,” said Bongaigaon, Superintendent of police Swapnaneel Deka. So far, the Bongaigaon police have handed over 45 reports to the victim families at home. Some reports are stowed in the police station for years, and the victim families are in other states. The district police are sending the reports through registered posts. The district police are serving the reports on a daily basis. Bongaigaon police are working on 40 more such reports this week. The chief minister also asked the police department to expedite the police verification process of passports of students who want to go abroad for higher study.

Top officials of Assam police said that the department is working on it. The passport verification will also be done within seven working days and will send back to the passport authority. The official said police would communicate with the applying student. He or she doesn’t need to come to the police station to request the verification.
