BJP MPs, Ministers brief Modi; blames Congress for 'stoking' troubles b/w Mizoram-Assam

                                                                                                                                                                     Nirendra Dev

Talking to reporters, Rijiju said the BJP MPs briefed the Prime Minister on efforts being made by the Congress party to "destabilise the northeast."

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday directed its ire on the unfortunate and vexed Assam-Mizoram border dispute against the Congress and alleged that its 'ecosystem' is only trying to stoke the temper between two neighbourly states.

A delegation of BJP lawmakers from northeastern states led by Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the vexed Assam-Mizoram dispute. They blamed Congress and its ecosystem for trying "many dirty tricks."

".... Congress and their ecosystem is trying many dirty tricks," said a four-page memorandum submitted to Modi.

The memorandum also alleged that Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi "were not sensitive" to the aspirations of Naga and Mizo communities.

"Through 2018 they tried to make CAA and NRC as political issues but the people of the North East gave them a befitting reply. Now, they are stroking tempers between Assam and Mizoram," said the memorandum signed among others by former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister Pratima Bhowmick (from Tripura) besides Rijiju.

Talking to reporters, Rijiju said the BJP MPs briefed the Prime Minister on efforts being made by the Congress party to "destabilise the northeast."

The Union Law Minister said there is no doubt that Prime Minister Modi is "sentimentally" connected to the people of the northeast.

"And we also told the Prime Minister that under his leadership, the northeastern region is seeing unprecedented development. No other Prime Minister has taken care of the northeast in the manner Narendra Modiji is doing," Rijiju said.

“Answering questions on whether 'foreign elements' are also behind the unfortunate mishap, Rijiju replied: "Yes, yes, we will come out with that."

"We the undersigned want to state clearly that the nefarious designs of the Congress will not succeed...," the memorandum said.

The members also said they were "pained" by the frequent disruption of Parliament proceedings by the Congress party.

The important meeting between the BJP lawmakers and Prime Minister Modi took place amid reports that both the states would be taking proactive steps and displaying good gestures to ensure peace.

On behalf of Mizoram police, an FIR against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Vairengte Police Station on July 26 would be withdrawn as a 'positive gesture' from the Mizoram police for the sake of peace in the border areas.

Assam police may also do the same vis-à-vis Mizoram's Rajya Sabha MP K Vanlalvena (MNF) for his alleged "threatening statement" against the people of Assam.

Meanwhile, the 'economic blockade' allegedly enforced by Assam-based organisations has disturbed normal life in Mizoram.

Kolasib district deputy commissioner H. Lalthlangliana said no vehicle had entered the state through Kolasib, either from Cachar or Hailakandi districts of Assam.

The memorandum, among other issues, blamed Congress dispensations from time to time for their follies regarding Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram and other states.

"The Congress party keeps taking credit for the Mizo Accord but in less than two years of the Accord, then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi dismissed and humiliated Laldenga (former rebel leader and ex-Chief Minister) so that the state could have a Congress government," the memorandum alleged.

It also said: "If the Congress party took a harder stand on China, the people of Arunachal Pradesh would sleep even more peacefully than they did for many years," it said.
