India’s population aged 18 years and above is about 94 crores, and the country completed administering 47.29 crore first doses, and over 61 crore doses of Covid vaccine were administered by Thursday.
In a milestone, the country administered over 50 per cent of its eligible population at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine by Thursday (August 26). The total population of the country aged 18 years and above is about 94 crores. By Thursday (August 16), the country had administered 47.29 crore first doses. The total number of doses administered is above 61 crores.
The Union Minister of Health, Mansukh Mandaviya, posted on Twitter, “India achieves unprecedented milestone! 50% of the eligible population inoculated with the first dose of #COVID19 vaccine. Keep it up India. Let us fight Corona.”
The world’s largest vaccination against Covid-19 was started in India in January this year. Earlier, the frontline workers like doctors, sanitation workers were prioritised. From May onwards, it was opened for everyone above 18 years old. India’s vaccination drive started with two vaccines: Serum Institute manufactured Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.
Covaxin is a fully indigenously developed and manufactured vaccine. Zydus Cadila’s vaccine, which is also fully indigenously developed, has also got the EUA (Emergency Use Authorisation) approval. Other vaccine candidates are also in the pipeline.
