Guwahati: Terming child trafficking as a social menace that hinders a nation’s progress, Assam Governor professor Jagdish Mukhi advocated for a strict deterrence against it with prosecutions to the criminals on a fast track basis.

Releasing a video of the poem titled ‘Okani Okani Boli’ at a program held in Raj Bhavan on Sunday (August 8), Governor Mukhi also commented that, to address the social menace, village-level child protection committees should be formed, and the child protection mechanism should be strengthened across the State.

Children make up a significant segment of our nation. Therefore, it becomes pertinent to take special care for their protection, said the Governor, adding, “It is important for all stakeholders ranging from the government, non-government to private sectors to fulfil their responsibilities towards the children.”

Stating that Assam has 41% children of its population, Governor Mukhi hailed the timely intervention of Assam police in rescuing 40 children of Chirang district from Sikkim recently. Rescued children were reunited with their parents, and the government has taken special steps for education and upbringing as per the recommendations of the child welfare committees.

He also appreciated senior police officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta for the video poem and hoped that its message would help everybody realize the pain & sufferings of every child and motivate every single individual to fight against the menace along with the child abuse in society. The Governor did not forget to emphasize a scientific rehabilitation system for the rescued children.
