Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said population control is urgently needed for development. The government’s focus is on implementing population control measures through consensus.
The Himanta Biswa Sarma government of Assam will present its budget on July 16. Chief Minister Sarma said the government would also unveil its population policy in the budget session, which is starting Monday (July 12).
He said, “An important announcement regarding population policy, including voluntary sterilization and other measures, would be made in the state Budget.”
In the run-up to the budget session, the chief minister met 150 Muslim intellectuals and discussed the way forward about population control measures.
The Assam government has also restricted the entry of couples with more than two children into government jobs.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was state health minister in the previous BJP government, has been continuously raising his voice against the growing population.
Earlier, he had said the unchecked population was putting a strain on the resources.
