Dreaded gangster and Lalu Yadav’s confidant Mohammad Shahabuddin passed away in Delhi on Saturday.
He has been undergoing treatment for Covid-19 in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital since April 20.
He was serving a jail sentence in Tihar for a murder case.
Shahabuddin rose to prominence in late 80s in Siwan in Bihar. The political patronage from former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav ensured he always remained at a safe distance from law.
In 1990, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly and entered the Lok Sabha in 1996.
He was an MP till 2009.
His reign of terror continued parallelly.
Finally, the law caught up with him when he was accused of killing two brothers in Siwan using acid.
The Supreme Court had transferred Shahbuddin from Siwan jail to Tihar in 2017 on a plea that he was influencing the trial of other cases against him.
In 2009, his wife Heena Shahab contested Lok Sabha polls from Siwan but lost.
Lalu’s son and Leader of Opposition in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadaw, condoled the death of Shahabuddin.
