Guwahati: Campaigning for the third (also last) phase polling of Assam legislative assembly elections continues with full swing as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address rallies in western part of the State once again today after some time seeking votes for the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates along with nominees of political allies.
The third phase, scheduled for 6 April next, covers 40 assembly constituencies where 79,19,641 general electors will decide the fate of 338 candidates belonged to various political parties and some independents. Among the eligible voters there are 40,11,539 males, 39,07,963 females and 139 trans genders. In the first and second phase, Assam recorded around 80% voters’ turnout. The results are expected on 2 May.
Meanwhile, BJP national president JP Nadda, State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal etc yesterday addressed poll rallies in various parts seeking supports for the party candidates along with UPPL nominees. Nadda promised in his speech that the party, if voted to power in the State, would make Assam flood-free in the next five years. He also asserted that the saffron party would continue working for the development of Assam.
Sonowal, while attending public meetings at Bijni, Sarbhog, Dharmapur, Dudhnoi, Palashbari and Hajo urged the voters to reject the opposition Congress and its political allies in the electoral battles. Talking about the tenure of BJP led government in Dispur, he claimed that it ensured safety of language and culture of all communities. During the
Congress rule, people experienced communal clashes among various communities like Bodo, Adivasi, minority Muslim, etc where many lost their lives, he stated.
“Five years ago, Assam was plagued by corruption as the Congress government looted money meant for the poor families. Today the scenario has changed. The BJP led government has minimised corruption to a great extent through relentless efforts. Our government sent many corrupt officials behind the bar and also provided jobs to many meritorious youths in a transparent way,” said Sonowal.
Commenting that now beneficiaries are getting government scheme benefits directly in their bank accounts without middlemen, Sonowal asserted that during the Congress time people had to bribe for getting basic government services. He also added that women had to face a lot of atrocities in Congress tenure where the perpetrators went scot free as no punitive action was taken against them.
“But now, the BJP government has ensured the safety and security of womenfolk in the State enabling them to live a life of dignity while strengthening the unity and camaraderie among the people of both Brahmaputra and Barak valleys in its quest for a developed Assam,” he pointed out.
Highlighting the success of various schemes like Arunudoy, employment generation for unemployed, Mukhyamantrir Sa-Sajuli Achoni, etc Sonowal assured that every homeless family in the State would be given houses under PMAY in near future. Reiterating the ruling party’s commitments for protecting the dignity and identity of all
communities, Sonowal also added that the saffron party was striving towards realising the target of Atmanirbhar Asom.
