The United Nations declared October 15, the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, as World Students' Day in 2010. This year, the theme of World Students' Day is ‘Learning for people, planet, prosperity, and peace’.
Popularly known as the 'Missile Man of India', Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu on October 15, 1931. He served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007.
Dr Kalam suffered a stroke, while delivering a lecture to the students of IIM Shillong, and passed away on July 27, 2015.
He was honoured with 'Bharat Ratna' for his contribution to the scientific research and modernisation of defence technology in India.
