Guwahati: Visiting the family of a minor rape victim at Bhuragaon in Morigaon district, Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday asserted that the perpetrators of the heinous crime will not be spared. Sarma, also in charge of the State home portfolio, empathized with the victim’s family members and assured them that the government would ensure stringent punishments to the culprits.
“Every life is precious! What happened to a religious minority girl (9 years old) in Bhuragaon, Morigaon was very unfortunate. While meeting with the parents of the girl, I assured them of proper legal actions against the perpetrators,” said CM Sarma in the presence of Parliamentarian Dileep Saikia, legislators Ramakanta Deuri and Asif Mohammad Nazar, State police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, etc.
Mentionable is that the minor girl belonging to the religious minority community was raped and murdered at Bhuragaon on 20 June by the miscreants. Her body was recovered from a paddy field in Balidonga village. Sarma ordered the Morigaon district police chief Aparna Natarajan to nab the culprits as early as possible for punishing them under the laws.
Criminal eliminated: Bubu Konwar alias Binod Gogoi, a dreaded criminal of Assam, was killed in the exchange of fire with the police at Geleky in Sibsagar locality on Wednesday evening. The 45-year-old car-lifter turned contract killer sustained severe injuries while facing the cops and later succumbed to injuries at Geleky civil hospital.
Known as a notorious contract killer, Bubu was also involved in many other crimes like illegal drug peddling, extortion, and honey trapping in the State. He killed no less than 40 persons, including many drivers before, snatching away their vehicles in the last two decades. Arrested many times, Bubu continued unlawful activities soon after getting the bail every time.
Sibsagar police, following secret information, made a trap at Geleky forest area for Bubu, who arrived at the location along with a two-wheeler rider. The police claimed that he was asked to stop but did not respond and fired at the forces. Finally, he was shot at by the police on duty in retaliation. His associate succeeded in escaping. The police recovered one 7.65 mm pistol, one magazine, five live ammunition, two mobile phones, etc from the spot.
Budu was allegedly involved with several high-profile murders including the assassination of Congress leader Hemanta Bora, physician Mridul Baruah, businessman KL Ginoria, school teacher DN Gogoi, etc.
He admitted in 2016 about his involvement with at least 42 murders, more than 25 cases of car thefts. The criminal was lately arrested in March from Jorhat with some packages of brown sugar and freed on bail.
Earlier, on a separate occasion, the State police gunned down two rebels who belonged to the banned armed outfit United Peoples’ Revolutionary Front (UPRF) in an encounter that took place at Singhason hills in Karbi Anglong district on Sunday. Two AK-47 rifles, several important documents were recovered from the spot. Last year, UPRF top leader Martin Kuki was also killed in an encounter with the security forces.
Weeks back, six rebels of banned outfit Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) were killed in the Dhansiri area of Karbi Anglong. The police, along with Assam Rifles personnel, eliminated the armed militants and recovered a large volume of arms and ammunition from the spot. DNLA is waging a war against New Delhi demanding a sovereign country for the Dimasa people.
