S Gurumurthy, noted economist, columnist and editor of Thuglak has escaped from an attempted attack on his house by bike borne miscreants. The attack comes a week after Superstar Rajinikanth had exposed the anti-Hindu attitude of EVR Naicker aka Periyar at the magazine’s 50th anniversary celebrations. . An alert guard posted at Gurumurthy’s residence foiled the attack, reports New Indian Express.
Nine men allegedly attempted to barge into the house of noted journalist, columnist and editor of Thuglak magazine S Gurumurthy, in the city in the early hours of Sunday. A search has been launched to nab them, says the TNIE report. The video of the intruders has been caught on CCTV installed at the residence, say police.
According to police, the men who arrived on bikes attempted to gain entry into Gurumurthy’s house at Varadarajapuram in Mylapore. Though the motive of the intruders is not clear it is suspected that the debate caused by Rajinikanth’s statement on EVR’s 1971 anti-Hindu procession had angered many Dravidian chauvinists who were angry and had filed cases against Rajinikanth. The Madras High Court had refused to honor the petitions and had asked the petitioners to approach the district magistrate courts instead.
Unperturbed by the attempted attack, Gurumurthy said that such attacks are not new and he has been facing threats for the last 30 years. “They need better training and more courage”, he quipped in his tweet. He then tweeted about the alert dog of his friend which alerted the security and made the miscreants attack impossible.
Similar attempts were made on him in 2013 and 2014 too. Tweeting on the earlier attempts, Gurumurthy wrote that the earlier attempt on his life in 2013 was revealed when the assailant Fakruddin was caught by the police before he could shoot him. In March 2014, attempt was made to break his house doors in the night using various ways.
