Tree plantation on Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee?s birth anniversary
FOC

Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Memorial Trust organised a function in New Delhi on July 6 to celebrate the 105th birth anniversary of the founder of Jan Sangh, the erstwhile BJP. The function began with planting of five trees by veteran BJP leaders, including Shri Jagadish Prasad Mathur, Atal Behari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Jena Krishnamurthy and Kidar Nath Sahani. According to Dr Ram Kripal Sinha, secretary of the Trust, ?With this function a weeklong tree plantation drive has begun and trees would be planted across the country on a large scale.?

Addressing the gathering, Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee said that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee sacrificed his life for maintaining the freedom of the nation. Mentioning the recent terrorist attack on Ramjanma-bhoomi in Ayodhya and the growing terrorist activities in different parts of the country, he said that freedom was not a permanent feature. He asked the Central Government to explain to the country how the terrorists had succeeded in reaching the Ramjanmabhoomi site. He warned that carelessness may put the nation?s freedom in danger and every person in the country should remain alert. The former Prime Minster added that undoubtedly India was a powerful nation, but a minor breach could land the nation in serious trouble. ?If the terrorists could succeed in entering the Ram temple through Sita Rasoi, the temple could also be in danger,? he said, asking the government to beef up the security.

Shri L.K. Advani said that despite the integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of the country as seen today, it was only due to the sacrifice of Dr Mookerjee. He said the birth centenary celebrations of Dr Mookerjee had greater significance this year, as it was the silver jubilee year of the BJP. He said the fortnight from June 23 to July 6 witnessed two major incidents in Indian history, one, sacrifice of Dr Mookerjee and the other, imposition of Emergency in the country.

Shri Kidar Nath Sahani, while presiding over the function, elaborated on the proposed construction of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Memorial Trust. He said that the plot provided by the government would have a very huge memorial and the construction work on the memorial would begin soon. He also said that the memorial would publish the unpublished material collected over the years on Dr Mookerjee. Shri Jaswant Singh also shared the dais.
