Flood relief by Sewa Bharati in Tamil Nadu
Certain areas of Tamil Nadu witnessed an unprecedented downpour recently, which turned out to be a shocking experience for the people. In Chennai, the people who were sleeping at night were rattled. In such a situation the RSS workers rose to the occasion and started relief activities immediately under the banner of Sewa Bharati. Places like Kotturpuram, Velacheri, MGR Kuppam near K.K. Nagar, Arumbakkam, and areas in North Chennai like Kargil Nagar, Rajaji Nagar and Manali were the worst-affected. In Kotturpuram, nearly 11,000 families were stranded in the flood-water. Over 1,500 persons were rescued by the Swayamsevaks through boats. The Swayamsevaks distributed 20 sacks of water packets to people. They also distributed food packets in the Kargil Nagar and Rajaji Nagar areas of North Chennai. Sewa Bharati?s medical team has been functioning in Kotturpuram and Arumbkkam areas. In Cuddalore, Vattathoor, Dhandehwaranalloor, Kuppam, Kodhandavilagam, Vizuppamthurai, Kurichchikkudi, Kudaliyathur, Sakthivilagam, Anavari, Kanur and Perur villages were submerged in the flood water. The Swayamsevaks from Palayamkottai cycled 12 kilometers to reach the affected areas and rescued the aged and pregnant women and children and housed them in shelters. In Tiruchirapalli district the Swayamsevaks distributed milk, bread and biscuits to the residents.

No compromise on 9.5 per cent EPF rate: BMS
Strongly criticising the Union Labour Ministry for reducing the interest rate on Employees Provident Fund (EPF) from 9.5 per cent to 8.5 per cent, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has threatened to launch a countrywide agitation if the interest rate is not fixed at Rs 9.5 per cent. The BMS has given 15 days time to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who at the Indian Labour Conference in Delhi on December 9 assured the trade union leaders to look into the matter. Talking to Organiser Shri Hasubhai Dave, former BMS president, said all the trade unions including INTUC, HMS, CITU, AITUC and UTUC (LS), had supported the BMS view on the issue. All trade unions at a meeting held in Delhi on December 7 have unanimously given 15 days time to the Prime Minister to fix the EPF rate at 9.5 per cent failing which a countrywide Protest Day will be observed against the government. The BMS has also urged the government to raise the rate of interest on SDS to 9 per cent so that the EPF board could mange to pay 9.5 per cent interest to the contributors. (FOC)

Slander against RSS removed
It is a case of a history textbook making history of sorts. Tamil Nadu government did what no authority has done so far in independent Bharat. Its Education Secretary has ordered removal of an offending reference to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) obviously bowing to the representations from the Sangh. In lesson 19 of the 12th standard history textbook, published by the Directorate of School Education, Tamil Nadu under the title ?India After Independence?, it was mentioned ?the most important event after Independence was the murder of Gandhi by a Hindu fanatic and a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Nathuram Vinayak Godse?. The RSS held protest demonstrations throughout Tamil Nadu demanding removal of the blatant falsehood. Petitions were sent to various authorities including the Prime Minister. A team comprising of Shri U. Sundar, Prant Pracharak, Uttar Tamil Nadu, Shri K.N. Lakshmanan, BJP MLA and Shri S. Srinivasan, advocate of the Madras High Court, met the Director, School Education, Tamil Nadu, and presented a petition demanding removal of the offending portion from the textbook. A petition was also filed by Shri R.V.S. Marimuthu, Sanghachalak of Samyuktha Tamil Nadu, in the Madras High Court. The court issued notices to the Director of School Education and the Tamil Nadu government. Meanwhile, Smt Girija Vaidyanathan, Secretary in the Department of School Education, issued an order (letter (MS) no 187, School Education, dated 3.10.05) directing the Director of School Education to remove the offending portion immediately.
