The aircrew of ‘Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment’ have tested an An-32 aircraft using blended bio-jet fuel—10% Jatropha oil blended Aviation Turbine Fuel, in line with the government’s thrust to encourage bio-jet fuels and reduce its fuel import bills. The CAS has expressed its intention to fly An-32 in the Republic Day flypast on January 26, 2019. As per the IAF spokesperson, “The project is a combined effort of IAF, DRDO, Directorate General Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum”.

2. INDIAN AIR FORCE EVALUATES ITS RAPID AIR LIFT CAPABILITY
Towards evaluating its ‘Rapid Airlift Capability’, the Indian Air Force airlifted a record 463 tonnes of load in six hours from Air Force Station Chandigarh to various airfields and drop zones in the Ladakh region, in a single wave. 16 transport aircraft - C-17, IL-76 and AN-32 were involved in this exercise.
3 . INDO MALDIVES JOINT TRAINING EXERCISE – EKUVERIN 2018
Ekuverin 2018, the next in the series of bilateral exercises between India and Maldives commenced on December 15, 2018 at the Northern Headquarters of the Maldives National Defence Force (MDNF) located at Maafilaafushi. The opening ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Wais Waheedh, Commander Marines of MNDF, Contingent commanders and participants from both sides. This exercise basically focuses on counter-terrorism, counter insurgency and amphibious operations. The Indian contingent consists of a platoon of Madras Regiment. The exercise will conclude on December 27, 2018.
4. INDIA-RUSSIA INTER-GOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION ON MILITARY TECHNICAL COOPERATION
The 18th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC), co-chaired by Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation General Sergei Shoigu was held in Delhi on December 13, 2018. As per the press release of the Defence Ministry, a wide range of issues relating to deepening defence ties, technological cooperation between India and Russia, joint manufacturing projects including the Kamov-226, various land system projects and naval frigates were discussed. The Russian Defence Minister’s visit assumes significance as a deal was signed between India and Russia to buy Russian made S-400 air defence missile system.
5. ISRO LAUNCHES GSAT-7A COMMUNICATION SATELLITES
On December 19, 2017, ISRO’s GSLV-F11 rocket lifted off at 4:10 pm from Sriharikota and successfully placed into orbit a 2.2 Kg Ku-band geostationary communication satellite-GSAT-7A. The satellite is mainly intended to enhance the communication capability of the INDIAN AIR FORCE through interlinking of its assets and boost network-centric warfare capability. These assets include aircraft, ground radars, Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles etc. GSAT-7A will provide a boost to the air force war fighting capability and act as a force multiplier. “The launch is a tremendous jump in our networking capabilities. It will be very beneficial to our communication network,” Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa told reporters in Jodhpur.
6. PASSING OUT PARADES OF IAF AIR WARRIERS
3200 IAF Trainees of Airmen cadre passed out from Airmen Training School Belagavi on 15 December 2018, after completion of their basic training and moved out to various IAF Trade Training Establishments. Air Vice Marshal S Ravi Vridhachalem, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Personnel-Airmen and Civilians) reviewed the parade and presented trophies to meritorious trainees. Air Craftsman (Under Training) Indraveer Singh was adjudged as Best in Academics as well as “Overall First in order of merit”.
7. 139 AIR FORCE CADETS COMMISSIONED AT AIR FORCE ACADEMY
General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff conferred the ‘President’s Commission’ to 139 Flight Cadets including 24 women Cadets who successfully completed their basic and professional training at Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Hyderabad. He presented the Chief of the Air Staff Sword of Honour to Flying Officer Sukhmandeep Singh for standing 1st in the overall merit in Pilot Course. Of the 24 women Cadets commissioned, Flying Officer Priya Sharma will be joining the fighter stream. She is the seventh women officer to join the fighter stream.
The 10th edition of India-Russia Maritime Bilateral Exercise—INDRANAVY 18 concluded on the East Coast of India. The two sides exchanged best practices through exercises such as Visit Board Search and Seize drills, Replenishment at Sea, and Anti-submarine Warfare Manoeuvres.
9. 48TH VIJAY DIWAS
India celebrated the 48th Vijay Diwas on December 16, 2018, the day on which Indian Armed Forces achieved a glorious victory over Pakistan in 1971. Ninety three thousand Pakistani troops along with their Commander, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi had surrendered to the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini in Dhaka on this day. Rich tributes were paid by the President, Vice President, Prime Minister and people from every section of the society to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the war. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with Admiral Sunil Lanba, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and Vice Chief of Army Lieutenant General Devraj Anbu paid tribute to the martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti. n
