I-Calling

Niranjan Prasad Mitra, Halisahar : Indian-born Pakistani agents are now propagating that Kargil was the creation of Atal Behari Vajpayee for winning the election. Comment.

—Had they said anything else they would not have their commission as agents.

* * *

Why does the Government of India not withdraw its High Commission from barbaric Pakistan?

—As Nawaz Sharif's wife told Clinton India is a civilised country. So civilised behaviour will always be different from barbaric behaviour.

* * *

Do you think using an atom bomb would solve the Kashmir problem?

—That is what Pakistan seems to think, going by the latest disclosure that it has kept many nuclear missiles aimed at India.

* * *

What do you think of the stupidity of those who targeted Advani as a foreigner?

—They show swadeshi stupidity for their videshi boss.

Kumar Devesh Baranwal, Mirzapur : Now that Atalji is Prime Minister has not his priority shifted from masses to classes?

—Such shifts are inevitable for a prime minister treading on the shifting sands of coalition politics.

Sourav Datta, Calcutta : My watch showed 31-12-99 on the last day of the second millennium, but on the first day of the third millennium it showed 1.1.00. Comment.

—Perhaps it means the third Christian millennium may end in a zero, repeat zero.

* * *

A wineshop owner has been made Sherif of Calcutta. What do you say?

—He may get drunk with power.

* * *

A rebel Marxist leader says, in a democracy the dictatorship of the proletariat is obsolete. Comment.

—That has not prevented Indian Marxists from having absolute faith in obsolete Marxism.

* * *

This Marxist leader also says he will drop the word ‘Communist’ from the name of his new party if he is forced to form one. Comment.

—What is in a name? A piece of filth by any other name would stink the same.

Laxmi S. Kulkarni, Kalyan : Prime Minister Vajpayee has asked France to make a clear choice between democratic India and Pakistan under military rule if it wants a strategic partner in South Asia. Comment.

—As the late M.C. Chagla once said, the French have a passion for precision, so let us hope they know precisely what they want.

* * *

MQM leader Altaf Hussain has said the military establishment in Pakistan once led to its disintegration, and now it will lead to further disintegration. Do you agree.

—A leading Pakistani journalist once described Pakistan as a failed state, so the Pakistani military is only helping it to fail.

P.R. Akula, Secunderabad : If there was failure of ‘intelligence’ in the Congress rule there was also the same failure under the Vajpayee rule. Comment.

—We Indians like to preserve our traditions, so one can say we have maintained the tradition of failure.

* * *

What do you think of our declining parliamentary standards under the award-winning parliamentarian Shri Vajpayee?

—When the Parliament is made up of five hundred odd numbers we need five hundred awards for raising these standards.

* * *

What do you think of the report that Muslim terrorists calling themselves "soldiers of Islam" have come from a dozen countries to "liberate" Kashmir?

—Our super-secularist Nehru's internationalisation of Kashmir has led to this international terror in Kashmir.

* * *

Once a news item said Sanskrit has no word for corruption. What do you say?

—Our Sanskrit-speaking forefathers were too realistic about human nature for that, as you will see if you read Chanakya-Niti, where Chanakya says you can count the feathers in the wings of a flying bird but not the many ways in which a government official can indulge in corruption.

* * *

What is the place of Sanskrit in Vajpayee's India?

—The place of Sanskrit will depend upon the place of sanskriti.

Shrirang J. Godbole, Pune : Will our Italian Congress unfurl the Tricolour in Srinagar as it tried to do at RSS headquarters in Nagpur?

—Dastardly discretion is the better part of the verbal valour of the Congress.

* * *

Will Jammu go the Kashmir way for Hindus?

—There are 370 reasons why we should not let it happen.

* * *

Gujral had once said Teresa's death had orphaned India. Comment.

—Had he inspected Teresa's terrible orphanage he would have said India was lucky in being saved from becoming a similar orphan.

* * *

Why does the Vajpayee government fail to understand what the common man understands about the real use of the Samjhauta Express to which Pakistanis are putting it?

—Knowledge comes but wisdom lingers.

* * *

Why don't we stop playing cricket with terrorist Pakistan?

—That would deny our cricketers an opportunity to lose.
