Dalai Lama to address Millennium Peace Summit

From Our Correspondent

Dalai Lama “It is a matter of great significance for the Indian delegation to the World Peace Summit, that H.H. Dalai Lama has consented to be the Keynote Speaker at the closing session of the summit” said Dr Bhupendra Kumar Modi, the co-ordinator for the Indian subcontinent. As a result of the Indian contingent's persuasion H.H. Dalai Lama has accepted the invitation. History will be created at the Millennium World Peace Summit of religious and spiritual leaders when the world's pre-eminent religious and spiritual leaders would come together for the first time at the United Nations in New York from August 28-31, 2000. EArlier, Dalai Lama was not included in the list of speakers under the Chinese pressure. However, a loud protest from the world community forced the organisers to invite the Tibetan religous head to the peace summit.

Aimed at fostering the spirit of harmony, tolerance and acceptance, this unprecedented event has been conveyed by the United Nations in its quest for world peace, global unity, international co-operation and universal brotherhood. Addressing the world's population through a telecast and webcast from the UN General Assembly Hall, revered leaders from all over the world will demonstrate their united commitment and determination to work together to eliminate causes that perpetrate violence and lead to war by signing on a united Declaration of World Peace. This would be a major step towards fostering communal harmony and resolving conflicts across the world.

The UN Secretary General, Kofi A. Annan will preside over the opening session. The Indian contingent at the summit, led by Members of the Advisory Council, World Peace Summit—Dr L.M. Singhvi, Dr Abid Hussain, Dr Karan Singh and Dr Bhupendra Kumar Modi—is confident that this summit will be a turning point for humanity at large. It is believed that H.H. Dalai Lama's presence will go a long way in achieving the objectives of the Peace Summit. More than 100 religious and spiritual leaders of various faiths are expected to join the Indian delegation and some 200 observers including industrialists and intellectuals will also be part of the delegation.
