| Social structure
of Punjab necessitates a coalition Rinwa With Prof Brij Lal Rinwa elected the
new State President of Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab, the party heads towards a new
face lift. The first ever representative from the farming Jat community to be elected the
State president, Shri Rinwa was unanimously elected for the prestigious post on May 28. A
retired professor, Shri Rinwa had served as vibhag sanghchalak of the RSS for 7-8 years,
and the State unit of the BJP in various capacities. The new party president has many a
plans and agenda for his fellow partymen to strengthen and consolidate the party base in
the State and better its functioning and performance in the times to come. The party has gained a significant presence in the State, with its coalition partner, the Shiromani Akali Dal. For the individual growth of the party we have decided on a new approach and agenda, Shri Rinwa told Organiser when he was recently in Delhi. Excerpts from an interview: As new State president of the party what agenda have you decided for the partys progress? On our precedence are holding meetings, and primary workshops and forming committees to streamline, coordinate and motivate the cadres at the grassroots level. Work would be assigned individually at the district and mandal levels and the workers would be accountable to their immediate seniors. Regarding finances for the BJP, a novel scheme for membershipthe Aajeevan Sahayog Nidhi Sadasayata Abhiyanwould be launched in the categories of Rs 1,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 annually. But I would like to add that it is optional and aims at making the party more self-dependent. We want to make office of the treasurer or finance secretary more meaningful by recording any amount spent for the organization. This will also help in maintaining transparency. How would you assess the partys position minus the SAD support? I would not call it a strong position but certainly we have improved it. The social structure of the State necessitates a coalition and sharing of seats is the most suitable way. I would, though, like to point out that our cadres with their dedication and commitment have won the peoples admiration. What is the BJP-SAD's common line of action? As Shri Prakash Singh Badal has recently declared, to root out corruption is our priority. The issue of electricity tariff for commercial and domestic consumption, various other taxes, octroi, law and order, especially behavior of the police towards the common man are being discussed . The urban population is opposed to providing free electricity and water to the farmers. The Governments decision to do so will affect the vote bank due to lack of understanding of the issue. First we will have to offer a complementary package for the villagers providing for pesticides, tractors, lower loan rates, and water and electricity supply for longer hours. In short, subsidies for the farmers will continue probably with a little change. To save citizens from exploitation, especially in the irrigation department, the loans departments will be computerized, the Janashree Bima Yojana for people below the poverty line will be introduced and the officers will be motivated to make peoples problems heard. |
