Protest fasts in Kerala on Onam Day
S. Chandrasekhar & Pradeep Kumar
ONAM is the most important festival of
Kerala. The Onam feast, known as 'Onam Sadhya' is the highlight of the
10-day festivities. Families and relatives from far and near assemble
to feast together. In olden days it is believed that one should sell
even paddy fields to have 'Onam feast'. But this year Onam was different
for the Hindu organisations of Kerala as they had nothing to rejoice.
Fifty swayamsevaks of Thiruvananthapuram are languishing in jails for
the past two months on false cases including that of murder charges,
trumped up by the pro-CPM State police. Hence to protest against the
anti-Hindu moves of the CPM and police, the sangh parivar and the Hindu
Unity Front had called for hunger strike, boycott of 'Onam Sadhya' and
satyagraha in front of the State Secretariat, Collectorates and various
important centres in all the districts of Kerala.
In response to the call, whole day satyagraha and upavasa was observed
in 250 centres all over Kerala in which lakhs of people participated.
Addressing the massive rally which had assembled in front of the State
Secretariat at Thiruvananthapuram, State Organising Secretary of the
VHP, Shri Kummanam Rajasekharan charged the CPM Government and police
of harassing and intimidating Hindu organisations by impleading in
false cases and torturing the arrested swayamsevaks in gross violation
of all accepted norms of organisational freedom and Human Rights.
"All these are aimed at breaking the mental strength of the arrested
swayamsevaks", he said.
He charged the ideologically—defunct CPM of trying to eliminate political
adversaries by using the police force. He also alleged that the CPM
goondas and police were harassing the families of the swayamsevaks
in the name of arrests and raids. He warned the CPM and the police
to desist from anti-Sangh tirade and said that the Sangh will not
be cowed down by such threats. "The RSS born in fire will not wither
in sun", he thundered. S/Shri J. Sisupalan, Hindu Unity Front Convenor,
K. Raman Pillai and Madi Kai Kammaran, BJP leaders, and various leaders
representing all section of Hindu society also addressed the gathering.
The fast at Kochi was observed among others by S/Shri Parameshwar,
Director, Bharatiya Vichar Kendra; Sedhumadhavan, Prant Pracharak;
A.R. Mohan, Prant Karyavah and BMS State President Advocate Saji Narayanan.
Shri T.R. Somasekharan, State Organising Secretary Bharatiya Vichar
Kendram addressed the fasters.
