LUB for amending Delhi's Master Plan
From Our Correspondent
IN a recent move, Laghu Udyog Bharati (LUB) has decided to file
another writ petition after Supreme Court's decision on September
12, 2000 concerning the household and small scale industries of Delhi.
LUB's National President Shri Sudershan Sareen said that his organisation
is deeply concerned with the adverse effects on 1,37,000 industrial
units of Delhi. Shri Sareen informed: "if these 1,37,000 units of
Delhi are closed down, at least 15 lakh workers will loose their job.
Delhi wholesale markets such as Gandhi Nagar, Lajpat Rai Market, Bhagirathi
Palace, Chawri Bazar, Sadar Bazar, and Kashmiri Bazar etc will also
be affected because they are dependent upon these small scale, tiny
and household industries".
He added that 80 per cent of the revenue received by the State Government
comes from the small scale industries and the dependent wholesale
markets LUB is of the opinion that the Government did not give correct
information to the Apex Court and because of this this precarious
situation has arisen. Polluting and non-polluting units have been
confused with conforming and non-conforming units with the result
that all units in non-conforming areas are deemed to be polluting
units, which is not correct, Shri Sareen said. LUB demands that the
Government of India should appeal to the hon'ble Apex Court to review
its orders and the masterplan should be amended suitably so that the
people do not loose their jobs for the sake of cosmetic cleansing
of the mixed areas of Delhi. Those residential areas where more than
50 per cent industries are working should be declared mixed use areas.
LUB informed that the contribution of these industries towards pollution
of the city is no more than three per cent.
